Adobe has officially unveiled Photoshop 27.7, an update that reinforces the company’s commitment to generative artificial intelligence and local processing. The new version marks a significant shift in how some tools will function, reducing reliance on the cloud and allowing certain tasks to be performed directly on the user’s computer.

However, this technological evolution also brings high demands in terms of hardware, especially for those who intend to take advantage of the new AI functionalities in the device.

Photoshop 27.7 bets on local AI processing.

The main new feature of the update is the introduction of locally executed artificial intelligence models. Among the functionalities included is the Remove tool, used to eliminate objects from images without the need for online processing.

According to Adobe, this approach improves file privacy and speeds up certain operations, since processing no longer depends exclusively on external servers.

Despite the advantages, the technical requirements needed to use these features are quite high, especially on older or mid-range equipment.

Minimum requirements for using local AI in Photoshop

Adobe has revealed the requirements needed to run the new local AI features in Photoshop 27.7.

Requirements for Mac

On Mac computers, the following will be required:

• Apple Silicon M1 Pro processor or higher
• 24 GB of RAM or more
• macOS Tahoe 26.4 or later

The requirement of 24 GB of RAM may limit access to new features on many base MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models still circulating in the Portuguese market.

Windows requirements

On Windows, the requirements vary depending on the type of GPU installed.

Systems with NVIDIA

• 8-core CPU (Intel Rocket Lake or equivalent)
• 16 GB of RAM
• NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 Series or higher GPU
• At least 14 GB of VRAM

Systems with Intel GPUs

• Dedicated Intel Arc GPUs with a minimum of 12 GB of VRAM
• Integrated GPUs: Arrow Lake or Lunar Lake
• At least 32 GB of RAM on systems with integrated graphics.

Systems with AMD GPUs

• AMD RDNA2 GPUs or higher
• Minimum of 23 GB of VRAM on dedicated graphics cards.
• Up to 64 GB of RAM required on systems with integrated AMD GPU.

These specifications place the new local AI functionalities beyond the reach of many conventional computers, including several laptops used in professional and academic contexts.

Users without compatible hardware are limited.

Those who do not meet the requirements defined by Adobe will still be able to use the artificial intelligence features through the cloud, as long as they have an internet connection.

However, the local processing option will be automatically disabled on incompatible devices. Before installing AI models, Photoshop will perform a hardware compatibility check.

The American company states that this solution seeks to balance performance, security, and privacy, at a time when concern is growing about the use of personal data in AI services.

Firefly Boards gains integration with Photoshop.

Another new feature in Photoshop 27.7 is enhanced integration with Firefly Boards, Adobe’s platform dedicated to collaborative creation and exploration of content generated by artificial intelligence.

Users can now:

• Share documents directly from Photoshop to Firefly Boards.
• Create new boards or add content to existing projects.
• Use pre-configured layouts to explore visual ideas.
• Create mood boards, marketing content, and social media assets.

The integration also allows for opening variations of AI-generated images directly in collaborative work environments.

Premium generative AI features receive improvements.

Adobe also announced changes to the generative credit system used in its premium AI tools.

Credits can now be used for both standard and premium features, provided the user has an eligible subscription.

Additionally, the new Unified Account Menu allows you to manage your Adobe account, subscription details, and generating credits directly within the Photoshop Edit workspace.

Adobe is reinforcing its commitment to AI, but it demands increasingly powerful hardware.

With Photoshop 27.7, Adobe continues to accelerate the integration of artificial intelligence into its creative applications. The ability to run models locally represents a significant advantage in terms of privacy and performance, but also highlights the increased hardware requirements to support this new generation of tools.

For many users, especially creative professionals and design studios, investing in more powerful machines may become inevitable in the coming years.
